Design Wind Speed Characteristics
Wind load provisions differ worldwide, each using varying averaging schemes for wind, recurrence intervals, load coefficients and multipliers, safety factors, and so on. These differences make it difficult to make direct comparisons between codes for a particular structure. One common thread among all provisions is the assumed wind character—a neutral atmospheric boundary layer with mechanically generated turbulence whose intensity is dependent on the associated surface roughness. However, there are some critical load cases where this assumption may not be suitable, e.g. thunderstorm downbursts and tornados. This paper reviews the boundary layer structure for various wind events, differences in wind load provisions, and discusses some unresolved issues associated with both.
