Bridges Subjected to Impact Loads of Moving Vehicles Obtained from Vehicle Dynamics
In this paper the cumulative effect of road surface roughness, vehicle dynamics, vehicle weight and speed is considered to find the impact factor for highway bridges. AASHTO HS20-44 vehicle is considered running on a very good road. The roughness of the road surface profile is found by using the power spectral density function. The AASHTO truck is modeled as a 12 degree of freedom system to consider the vehicle dynamics. First the forces coming on the bridge deck are calculated taking into account the road surface roughness, then the forces are input to find the vertical deflection by orthotropic plate theory. The deflection obtained is compared with the static deflection to find the impact factor. The impact factor thus obtained is compared with the impact factor calculated from the AASHTO formula. This study shows that the AASHTO formula underestimates the impact factor.
