Influence of Interface Friction on Stresses and Deflections of Thin White-Topping Pavements
The cement concrete (CC) and asphalt layer interface condition (IC) greatly influences the structural response of thin white-topping (TWT) pavements. Limited literature is available on the quantification of the influence of CC-asphalt IC on stresses in CC layer. An attempt was made in the present study to evaluate the influence of the IC on the structural response of TWT pavement with the help of finite element models developed for 1 m×1 m panels of different thicknesses placed over an asphalt layer. These models were analyzed for different loading conditions and different coefficient of friction (CoF) values assigned to the CC-asphalt interface. The analysis was done for isolated single panel with zero temperature gradient. The variation in CoF from 0.1 to 10 resulted in a change in the maximum tensile stress by (-)9% to 15% for different combinations of TWT pavement considered.
