Timber Preservation, its Development and Present Scope
Timber preservation has not been developed from any one process, but from many; it has included the elimination of those not bringing results, the retention and development of those showing results, and the addition of new processes. The first authentic report on timber preservation was probably that of a Special Committee appointed by this Society in 1880, which report was published in 1885. The Special Committee discussed the various processes in use at that time, in great detail, and prepared a number of tables showing the results obtained; and it is interesting to know that a great many of its conclusions are accepted to-day by those conversant with the subject.
