Boussinesq Modeling of Waves and Longshore Currents under Field Conditions
In this study, a time-domain Boussinesq model for nearshore hydrodynamics is improved to obtain the conservation of vertical vorticity correct to the second order. This model is then utilized to simulate surface waves and longshore currents under field conditions. Satisfactory agreement is found between the numerical results and the measurements, including wave height and the longshore velocity component. The model results give insight into the spatial and temporal variabilities of the wave-driven longshore currents and the associated vertical vorticity field. One striking result of the simulations is the prediction of the strong longshore current in the trough shorewards of the bar as observed during the DELILAH field campaign.
