Effect of Straw Fiber Reinforcement on the Mechanical Properties of Adobe Bricks
The paper describes an experimental study investigating the effect of natural fibres on the mechanical properties of adobe bricks. Six laboratory-designed and produced adobe mixtures, containing different amounts of straw fibre, were examined in this study. The samples prepared were subjected to direct tension, bending and compression tests. The results show that the addition of fibres does not affect the mode of failure sustained under the loading conditions imposed. Mixtures with high fibre content tend to develop lower mechanical strength. However, straw fibres can increase deformability under compression and flexure, precluding sudden failure when the load-bearing capacity of the material is exceeded. The effect of fibre reinforcement on post-cracking tensile response was found to be rather limited, since all specimens tested exhibited brittle behaviour.
