Typical Failures of Composite Breakwaters in Japan
The most popular type of breakwater in Japan is the composite breakwater consisting of a vertical wall installed on a rubble mound foundation. To resist the enormous power of storm waves, especially in deep and rough seas, concrete caissons are usually employed as the vertical wall. While the development of adequate design and construction methods has generally prevented composite breakwaters from suffering total failure, heavy storms have occasionally caused substantial damage to the breakwaters. The present paper introduces and discusses composite breakwater failures in Japan over the past two decades in Japan.
