From Tiny Hole to Huge Problem Overnight—Emergency Culvert Pipe Repair
What started as a minor depression adjacent to Knight Drive in South Hanover Township (PA) turned in to a major emergency repair project, not quite overnight, but very quickly. A minor sinkhole was observed adjacent to the paving along Knight Drive by municipal staff. Preliminary investigation and research determined the existence of an 84-inch diameter corrugated metal pipe (CMP) approximately 45-50 feet in length running under the road. The CMP appeared to be deteriorated and misalignment at some joints was evident with soil visible. Original quotes obtained by the municipality varied from $25,000 to $38,000, for repair methods ranging from gunite to polyurea or polyurethane lining. Sliplining was another alternative discussed for rehabilitating the pipe.
