Case History: Micropile Use for Temporary Excavation Support
Highway construction projects in the mountains typically present access challenges and slope stability risks during construction. Long narrow working corridors restrict activities complicating construction staging and lengthening schedules. On a recent Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) project near Aspen, Colorado, a micropile shoring system was built in-lieu of temporary tieback walls to improve on-site workability. The micropile shoring system consisted of approximately 7,400 square meters of retained face along 1,600 linear meters of wall with a maximum-shored height of 7.5 meters and an average height of 4.5 meters. Micropile shoring design methodologies are presented and compared to field measurements of wall performance collected from inclinometers and strain gauges.
