Impact of New Satellite Port on North Madras Coastal Morphology—Case Study
A Satellite port is under construction, at a distance of about 15 km. north of Madras Port along the East coast of India As the port is located in a coastal belt, sensitive for sediment transport, its influence on coast equilibrium in near future is certain. A case study has been taken up to investigate on the nature of influence the new port would have on North Madras coast with special reference to a backwater, which is extensively used by (i) power stations for drawing coolant water and (ii) inhabitants to meet their livelihood. With an assumption that there are no man-made interference to the natural sediment movement along the coastal stretch of interest, a numerical model study supported by satellite picture and field measurements was conducted to assess the shoreline behavior. Remedial measures to keep the backwater alive were examined and strategy for construction of coastal structures such as long groyne and sea wall are recommended.
