Wood is among the oldest structural materials yet is still widely used in many capacities on construction and building projects. This paper emphasizes the relative importance of wood in construction and discusses the technical advances already achieved in the development and application of this versatile material. The subjects of grading and the establishment of working stresses are treated briefly in relation to their effect on the design of timber structures. The newer applications of wood are described, and a brief summary of necessary research is given.
