Flood Control of the Mississippi River
In view of the fact that, in recent years, devastating floods on relatively small streams present intricate problems in local flood control, the work of controlling the floods of the Lower Mississippi River looms as a gigantic undertaking. The Mississippi drainage basin covers an area of 1 240 050 sq. miles. The eastern extremity extends into Western New York about south of Buffalo, the western extremity, into Montana, west of Butte, the northern, into Western Canada, 70 miles north of the boundary line, and the southern extremity, at the Gulf of Mexico.
