An outline is given of the provisions and implementation of the 1972 UNESCO World Heritage Convention. Only during the past decade has serious attention been paid to the inclusion of monuments and sites of industrial heritage on the World Heritage List, and the paper details actions that have been taken and are being implemented to include full recognition of this vital component of the world's industrial heritage.
