Experimental Determination of Parameters for the Barcelona Basic Model for a Reconstituted Kaolin
Experiments were undertaken using a suction controlled oedometer to determine parameters for reconstituted South Carolina Kaolin, for use in the so called "Barcelona Basic Model", a constitutive model for describing the behaviour of partially saturated soils. The oedometer employs the osmotic method of suction control and incorporates a semi-rigid cell wall to enable the determination of lateral stresses in the soil sample throughout testing. Two series of five tests were undertaken. In the first series of tests, suction was held constant and vertical stress was increased incrementally. In the second series of tests, vertical stress was held constant and suction was increased incrementally. Unload-reload steps were also undertaken for selected tests in both series. The results from the tests were used to determine the stiffness parameters λ(s) in response to changes in net mean stress, and λs in response to changes in suction. The elastic stiffness parameters, k for changes in net mean stress, and ks for changes in suction, were determined from the limited unload-reload data collected. Clear trends were evident in the values of the stiffness parameters, and conclusions are drawn regarding the significance of the trends.
