The American Society of Civil Engineers Founded in 1852 in New York City: Civil Engineers and Civil Engineering in the Metropolitan Section
The histories of American civil engineering, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the development of the City of New York are closely linked. The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 sparked the rapid growth of the city and its need for infrastructure. Civil engineers responded and built the city's bridges and tunnels, water supply and waste water systems, skyscrapers and subways. Appropriately, the American Society of Civil Engineers was founded in New York City in 1852 and its headquarters remained there for nearly a century and a half until it moved to Reston, Virginia, in 1996. The engineers who built the city's infrastructure were leaders in the profession and were prominent in the society, several having served as president.
