Constructability Aspects of the South Fork Tolt River Project: Seismic Retrofit of the Intake Tower
The South Fork Tolt Reservoir located about 35 miles east of Settle, was constructed by the City of Seattle in the early 1960's. The Intake Tower, a freestanding reinforced concrete structure 180 feet tall, constitutes a key element of the Reservoir's facilities. Safety inspections and seismic stability analysis undertaken in the early 1990's indicated a potential for significant damage and possible collapse of the Intake Tower during large earthquakes of moment magnitude (Mw) 6.5 at 10 km and 7 at 15 km. The selected upgrade approach called for anchoring the tower to the foundation bedrock, post-tensioning the structure with high-capacity multi-strand tendon anchors.
