A Tale of Two Walls: Case Histories of Failed MSE Walls
This paper presents two case histories of segmental block, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls. Sites for the two walls are located in the Valley and Ridge physiographic province of southwestern Virginia, and eastern Tennessee. Both walls were greater than 7.6 meters (25 feet) high and were constructed using geosynthetic reinforcement within a clayey soil backfill. One of the walls failed; the other experienced large deformation, but remains in service. The paper presents the results of the forensic investigations and offers guidance for future designs. Factors contributing to the observed failures include not only the technical, but also professional issues. Technical issues include (but are not limited to) the engineering behavior of clayey/poorly draining soils within a reinforced soil structure. Professional issues include the adequacy or completeness of design calculations and of the resulting plans and specifications.
