Embodied Carbon Emissions of China’s Building Sector: A Dynamic Perspective
China’s large-scale construction has led to massive resource and energy consumption and emissions. The embodied emissions (ECs) of China’s building sector (BS) play a key role in realizing national emission reduction targets. Currently, the understanding about the status quo of EC is vague and inconsistent. Therefore, this study adopts two improved models (i.e., the process-based model and the input-output-based model) and dynamic factors to reveal the characteristics and developing trend of EC in China’s BS from 2005 to 2018. The results show that the total ECs in 2018 were about 2.08–2.13 billion tCO2, more than three times the emissions in 2005. The ECs increased quickly at first and have tended to be stable in recent years. The indirect ECs from upstream industries account for approximately 96% of the total EC. In 2018, the share of EC in China’s total energy-related emissions was approximately a quarter, similar to that of operational emissions in the BS. This study provides an overview of EC that can help guide the low-carbon development of the BS.
