Parametric Identification of Dynamic Granular Soil Properties by Ambient Vibration
To understand seismic soil dynamics and soil-structure interaction problems, laboratory and centrifuge simulations have been found to be very useful for direct physical insights and experimental calibration of analytical methods. In this paper, the results from a series of scaled-model seismic tests of a level sand stratum model on a large geotechnical centrifuge under ambient vibrations are reported. By means of a large soil container with a viscous material boundary and a passive in-box shake-table, the multi-modal resonant characteristics of the soil under ambient freefield condition of both horizontal and vertical modes of the finite soil model are captured and evaluated. By finding the agreement between the 3-D theoretical model and the data in not only the horizontal but also the vertical modes, it is shown that intrinsic material parameters such as the shear modulus and the Poisson's ratio of the soil can be estimated with practical accuracy from the ambient test data for seismic soil-foundation-structure interaction studies.
