Strengthening the Trident Wharf Precast Planks with Advanced Composite Materials
The Trident Wharf is located in the Port Canaveral in Cape Canaveral in the area known as the Space Coast. The wharf was constructed between 1975 and 1977 and required a major rehabilitation effort in order to continue operations. A critical aspect of the repair involved the strengthening of the prestressed precast concrete deck planks with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP). The use of CFRP was complicated by the fact that the existing corrosion and related concrete repairs created a potentially unreliable load path and required the consideration of mechanical anchorage. This paper will review the technical details and supporting structural testing related to anchoring composite laminates using composite anchors, while also emphasizing the required specification wording needed to qualify the design and the details that are not covered in the existing fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) codes or guidelines.
