Subsidence of the Terminal Island-Long Beach Area, California
By early 1945 the subsidence taking place in and around Terminal Island, Long Beach, Calif., had reached a maximum of more than 4 ft and the rate was approaching 1 ft per yr. Therefore, to protect existing structures and to evaluate the risks in future engineering enterprises in the area, it became imperative to determine the answers to three questions: (1) What is the cause of the subsidence? (2) Can its future progress be predicted? (3) What effect will it have on civil engineering works?
