Exploring Influencing Factors to the Riding Comfort of Bicyclists on Physically Separated Bicycle Roadways in China Using Proportional Odds Model
Better understanding the factors that influence bicyclists' riding comfort will provide transportation professionals useful information for bicycle facility design and management. The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the effects of contributing factors to the bicyclists' riding comfort perceptions on physically separated bicycle roadways in urban areas in China. To achieve this objective, field data was collected at 29 physically separated bicycle roadway segments in urban areas in Nanjing city. Based on the data, a proportional odds model was developed to quantitatively evaluate the impacts of factors on cycling comfort. It is found that factors significantly influencing riding comfort on physically separated bicycle roadways include the width of bicycle lane, separation form to pedestrian, number of uncontrolled access, residential surrounding and presence of bus stops.
