Seismic Retrofit of Embankment Dams to Mitigate Liquefaction: Selected Case Histories
Although safety considerations have traditionally guided the design of dams, performance-based design concepts are now being incorporated in the seismic design of new dams and the seismic retrofit of existing dams. Performance-based design calls for a refined assessment of seismic performance and potential earthquake damage. Earthquake-induced deformations are now commonly used to assess potential earthquake damage and the seismic performance of embankment dams. Because liquefaction can have a profound effect on the seismic performance and safety of existing embankment dams, it often drives the need to retrofit such dams. This paper describes three case histories of seismic retrofit of embankment dams to mitigate the effects of potential liquefaction and strength loss in the embankment and foundation soils. These case histories illustrate the use of performance-based design concepts in the seismic retrofit of embankment dams.
