Skid Resistance Analysis on Asphalt Pavement Based on Rubber Friction Mechanisms
Enhancing skid resistance of asphalt pavements is an urgent issue for pavement designers to improve traffic safety. This paper aims to investigate the theoretical mechanisms of friction coefficient between rubber and asphalt pavement and apply the method to estimate the skid resistance of asphalt pavements. The rubber friction theory was integrated with fractal features of asphalt pavements. Numerical example results were compared with laboratory test results measured by friction pendulum instrument. Further numerical calculations were conducted and analyzed to evaluate the impacts of different parameters to the friction coefficient. The results verify that the rubber friction theory could be applied to estimate the skid resistance of asphalt pavements and show the fractal dimension of asphalt pavements has the largest impacts on the skid resistance, which is followed by vehicle speed. The nonlinear relationship between the fractal dimension and the friction coefficient is achieved. Moreover, the selection of an inexplicit parameter in previous theories is recommended in the paper.
