Reliability of Deep Mixing Method Columns for Embankment Support
Embankments constructed on soft soils that are improved with Deep Mixing Method (DMM) columns induce both vertical and lateral loading on the composite foundation. The interaction of embankments, soft soil, and DMM columns is complex, yet current design practice for DMM foundation systems is based on simplified deterministic evaluations of settlement and slope stability. Two shortcomings of this approach are that (1) the properties of DMM columns installed in the field are highly variably and (2) limit equilibrium does not capture all modes of failure. These shortcomings are addressed in practice by using judgment and knowledge of precedent. However, this approach has produced failures due to under-design and excess costs due to over-design. Reliability analyses can provide the design engineer with another useful tool for embankment design by incorporating the variability of DMM column strength and modulus. This paper presents reliability analyses of stability and settlement for an example embankment. In the case of slope stability, a combination of numerical analyses and reliability analyses is needed for a complete understanding of system behavior.
