Reliability of Measured Geotechnical Properties
Geotechnical problems are unique and hard to pin down using exact mathematical models. In such environment there are numerous sources of ambiguity and imprecisely defined data. Conventionally, in the construction of mathematical models, the uncertainties are treated as random variables. Probability theory is perceived as the unique methodology to handle uncertainty in these parameters. Nevertheless, our preliminary investigations with geological and engineering geological maps, bore holes, field tests, sampling, laboratory work up to the analysis and design, are all combined with vague, indeterminist and to a great extent non statistical data. The application of decision theory and stochastic models in such an environment is linked up with many drawbacks and perplexing features. In this paper, the reliability evaluation of measured properties will be investigated applying the fuzzy- reliability techniques. Within this conception setting, the measured parameters are rendered into fuzzy variables and the structural safety is characterized by fuzziness. The procedure is proposed as an alternative or complementary postulation of reliability in geo-engineering. This approach will be illustrated with computational algorithms and a numerical example.
