The New Tacoma Narrows Suspension Bridge: Critical Issues in Seismic Analysis and Design
The scope of seismic work included establishment of design criteria, extensive analysis and validation of the design. Analysis and design included both FEE and SEE criteria. The analysis was performed for the upper-level configuration and the future lower-level configuration, as well as half-scour and no-scour conditions, using detailed three-dimensional time history models that included geometric and material non-linearity. The desired post earthquake level of service was verified using stress, deformation and ductility performance criteria. This paper describes key issues related to the seismic design of the bridge.
