Cavitation in High-Head Conduit Control Dissipators
The wasting of water from high-head hydraulic structures through a closed conduit requires an economical control and energy dissipator device which will safely contain the potentially destructive cavitation-prone flow. Hydraulic design criteria for a valve-orifice-chamber type of control dissipator are reviewed with regard to the influence that cavitation has on flow capacity, vibration, noise, and erosion. Orifices modified with peripheral devices to break up the continuity of the troublesome vortex rings showed substantial performance benefits when tested.
