Progress in Sanitary Engineering in the United States
Sanitary engineering-a science dealing with water supply and purification, sewerage and sewage treatment, drainage, refuse collection and disposal, and insect and vermin control—has achieved a remarkable progress record in the 100 years since Louis Pasteur initiated his experiments in bacteriology. Insect-borne and water-borne diseases have been conquered through the persistent efforts of early practitioners of sanitary engineering. This paper reviews the development of sanitary engineering in the United States. Prominent milestones are listed and related to the pattern of growth of the science. Future prospects are briefly discussed.
