The present status of topographic mapping of the United States and its possessions leaves much to be desired. Many of the maps are inadequate, and most are in danger of becoming obsolete. Changing standards and requirements have increased the rate of obsolescence.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has cooperated successfully with other federal and state agencies to produce maps that were valuable in the planning and supervision of many projects. Mapping standards of the Geological Survey are discussed.
