Investigation of Combined Storm Surge Inundation and Sea Level Rise to the New Bedford Hurricane Barrier
Shoreline stabilization structures are a means of protecting infrastructure located in close proximity to the coast from potentially damaging effects of storm events, including flooding due to storm surge. With sea level rise projected to increase several feet by the year 2100, coastal communities around the world may be vulnerable to increased storm surge inundation if the shoreline stabilization structures built to protect them were not designed to accommodate rising seas. This report reviews the potential increased inundation from the combination storm surge and sea level rise for different category hurricanes for the Port of New Bedford, Massachusetts. This report also serves as an evaluation of the resiliency of the design of the New Bedford Hurricane Barrier relative to future storm events and current projected sea level rise.
