Contractors and LEED Credits: Towards Sustainable Construction
Sustainable development is one of the most important global concerns of contemporary times. In response to this concern, the LEED Green Building Rating SystemTM has emerged as a popular consensus-based standard for certifying sustainable construction. This paper identifies those LEED credits which are the contractor's responsibility from the database of LEED certified projects listed on the USGBC website. This knowledge will help promote sustainable construction by encouraging contractor engagement in LEED certification. Building owners and designers are exhibiting a predilection for contractors experienced in sustainable practices and therefore, increased participation in LEED-certified projects can give contractors an edge in the competitive construction industry. Through the different credits identified in this paper, it is clear that contractors play a very important role in sustainable development as evidenced by the number and breadth of credits identified.
