On October 30, 2003, the Tropicana Parking Garage, for the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey, collapsed. Four construction workers were killed and 21 others were injured. The structure was a 10-story reinforced parking garage, which utilized filigree wide-slab (composite) concrete construction. This was a sudden and progressive collapse, which occurred during construction. Investigation revealed that failure to properly install steel reinforcing along with failure to provide adequate shoring and reshoring triggered the initial collapse. Although the technical cause(s) of failure were not difficult to understand, the loss emphasizes the need to carefully comply with drawings and specifications and to follow proper construction proceedings and sequencing. It also shows the need for redundancy in design.
