Morphodynamics of Trenches and Pits under the Influence of Currents and Waves — Simple Engineering Formulas
Analytical formulas are derived for the migration velocity and infill time of (dredged) trenches in the marine environment, using an harmonic analysis of simplified 1D basic equations for the morphodynamic system. The formulas can be used as simple engineering tools for the design of trenches and pits. They also provide insight into the main process parameters (waves, currents, depth, sediment properties) controlling the morphological behaviour and the role of the trench dimensions and shape (depth, length, side slopes). The formulas are verified with more sophisticated numerical models, laboratory experiments and a number of field cases in the North Sea.
