Probability is not a means of accommodating ignorance. Rather, it is the rational language of the uncertainty of nature. As examples, this paper demonstrates how the standard deterministic (Boussinesq) formulation for the bearing capacity of footings in geotechnical engineering is but a special case of a more general probabilistic solution. Of greater importance, three-dimensional slope stability analysis is introduced from probabilistic arguments.
