Structural Concept and Solution for Hybrid Modular Buildings with Removable Modules
The hybrid modular approach to architecture consists of a conceptual separation of permanent structural systems and removable living systems, in which a permanent, traditionally built structure hosts changeable modular living components. This way of conceiving buildings for residential purposes meets the emerging need for a high level of mobility among the global professional working class. A hybrid modular solution can provide dynamic and flexible housing services for a changing urban society. This paper aims to define the main guidelines and considerations for such hybrid modular buildings. Moreover, it develops possible technologies to fit the specific structural requirements of hybrid modular constructions, including random module interchangeability and fast plug-in and plug-out structural connections between the host structure and living modules. Such connection approaches further allow removable modules to be conveniently installed, disconnected, and relocated.
