Effects of Base Characteristics on Curling Stresses of Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavements
A realistic assessment of the curling stresses of continuously reinforced concrete pavements (CRCP) under different types of base is necessary for the rational design of concrete pavements. In this paper, the effects of six typical bases on curling stresses of CRCP subjected to temperature variation are evaluated using a 2D finite-element method. Base characteristics consider both the frictional bond-slip stiffness and base stiffness simultaneously. It is found that for concrete stress, a stiffer base is beneficial for CRCP, and the bond-slip relationship between slab and base (with no interface treatment) does not have a big influence on concrete stresses compared with vertical stiffness of underlying base. For steel stress, the variation for six typical bases is not significant. The steel are at tensile state at the longitudinal location lose to CRCP slab crack, and the maximum curling stress can be as large with a low temperature differential.
