Rehab-Centered Design Approach to Developing Highway Infrastructure
This paper presents the method of rehab-centered design for sustaining the life-cycle development of highway infrastructure. A system approach is applied to formalize the design methodology consisting of three tasks: requirement definition, conceptual modeling, and system evaluation. The first task defines the environmental and performance requirements for the development of civil infrastructure and considers feasible rehabilitation methods in the early phase of design and planning process. The second task models the design decisions in a conceptual structure integrating environmental requirements with life-cycle performance requirements Of infrastructure facilities. Related management decisions involved in the design are conceptualized using a model composed of information, processes, and uncertainties. A pilot study on the design methodology is applied for a simple-girder bridge to evaluate the benefits of the rehab-centered design approach to enhance the life-cycle performance of highway infrastructure.
