Back-Calculation Method of Subgrade Modulus Based on Traffic Speed Deflectometer
To quickly obtain the design parameters of subgrade modulus, the traffic speed deflectometer (TSD) that was validated by Beckman beam was used. The finite element software was used for 3D modeling with consideration of asphalt layer viscoelasticity and moving load. The influence of pavement modulus on the deflection basin was analyzed. Based on the Boussinesq semi-space theory solution, the subgrade surface modulus was back-calculated. The theoretical back-calculation accuracy was analyzed, and the case study was performed. The results show that the TSD has a significant linear correlation with Beckmann beam, and the coefficient R2 is 0.94. The change of pavement modulus has little effect on the outermost deflection. The average theory back-calculation error is 1.9%. The example verification shows that the calculated value of subgrade modulus based on AASHTO 1993 is large, while the back-calculation values based on the model proposed in this paper are close to the design values.
