Tests of Riveted and Welded Steel Columns
The tests reported in this paper were undertaken to secure a comparison of the behavior and strength of built-up steel columns fabricated by riveting, with similar columns fabricated by welding. The program included nine columns, of which two were riveted and seven were welded. In four of the welded columns, the welding was continuous throughout the length. In the other three welded columns, intermittent (or stitch) welding was used. The lengths (to the nearest inch) were 19 ft. 8 in. for three of the columns, 16 ft. 6 in. for two, 15 ft. 5 in. for three, and 5 ft. 6 in. for one.
