Increasing the Load-Carrying Capacities of Subgrades
The practice of strengthening pavement subgrades gradually by repairing depressed spots when necessary is incompatible with modern trends in rapidly increasing axle loads and traffic volumes. Adequate drainage, the use of granular material, and the development of heavy compaction equipment are the primary current solutions to the problem. These enable the construction of highways and airfields capable of bearing many repetitions of great anticipated loads with a minimum of repairing.
