Great manmade structures and spaces exhibit a universal truth. They incorporate a unified form and a creative vision based on shape, scale and geometric rules. Aesthetics and why certain manmade structures, forms, and art appeal to most people has been pondered and studied for over 2000 years. The ancient Roman architect Vitruvius begins the second chapter of the first book of his The Ten Books on Architecture with the statement that architecture depends on order, arrangement, eurythmy, symmetry, propriety, and economy. There is every reason to believe that Vitruvius was stating a commonly and widely accepted view in his emphasis on order and eurythmy, which is proportion and symmetry. A theory is that the appeal of certain architecture is grounded in nature. It appears that the architectural rules for the "perfect" buildings, the different members and forms must be in a comfortable scale, relation and sometimes symmetrical relation to the whole.
