Unique Design and Quality Control of Cement Deep Soil Mixing for Water Cutoff: BART Warm Springs Extension (WSX) Project, Fremont, CA
Construction of a cut-and-cover tunnel section is currently underway for the BART Warm Springs Extension (WSX) project in Fremont, CA. The tunnel is located near the Hayward Fault which is capable of generating ground motions up to 0.75g, and in an aquifer which is used for water storage and supply. The presence of the high groundwater table requires that water tight cut-off walls be installed to allow a dry cut-and-cover construction. This paper describes (1) the selection and design of a deep soil mixing method for water cutoff during construction of the cut and cover tunnel, (2) the construction aspects from the designer's and cutoff wall contractor's perspective and (3) the unique and innovative quality control methods used to verify the wall integrity to keep the project on schedule and within budget. In addition, the paper discusses how partnering allowed modifications to be made to the quality control program which in turn achieved the verification of the critical design features throughout the construction process.
