Foundation Reuse and Enhancement: A Viable Option for Bridge Widening and Replacement Projects
The transportation system in the U.S. includes over 607,000 bridges for grade separations, interchange configurations, and stream crossings. As governmental entities embark on the rehabilitation and rebuilding of our nation’s transportation infrastructure, increasingly the prospect of foundation reuse and/or enhancement arises. When reconstructing bridges and other structures along existing alignments, it's natural to wonder if the existing foundations can be reused. In fact, during various workshops and sessions held as part of the Transportation Research Board's (TRB) annual meeting from 2014-2016, attendees have indicated strong interest in the topic of foundation reuse.
