Behavior of the Longitudinal Construction Joint of Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement
In order to investigate the behaviors of the longitudinal construction joint of continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP), one set of vibrating wire strain gages (VWSG) were instrumented in a new constructed CRCP transversely, one was located at the longitudinal construction joint, six were embedded in the two adjacent concrete slabs of the joint respectively. Nine steel strain gages (SSG) were installed on three tie bars in sequence. Data logger CR1000 was used to monitor the behavior of the concrete and collect the data from the setting time. Temperature variation of the concrete was tested by the thermocouple at different depth. The result show that the opening of the joint and the movement of slab have been affected by the environmental factors and change with time. The opening of the joint at the early age resulted from the drying shrinkage of the concrete and cycled with the daily temperature change. The linear regression between the concrete movement and temperature represents the different of the effects of the temperature and drying shrinkage on joint. The analysis on SSG shows that the effects of the environment on the concrete affect the behavior of the steel. The findings in this research are beneficial for the design of the construction joint for the CRCP.
