Urban Drainage System Impacts from the Cerro Grande Wildfire
The rainfall events to-date have provided explicit evidence of the magnitude of damage to urban drainage systems and nearby infrastructure that results from post-fire hydrologic changes. Yet, these have been relatively small, frequently encountered rainstorms. How would the drainage system respond to a 100-year event? To assess potential flooding, the authors and Los Alamos National Laboratory (Laboratory) hydrologists have employed the HEC-1 and HEC-GeoRAS models to determine flood peaks and volumes and floodplain inundation for events with recurrence intervals ranging from 2 to 100 years. A discussion of modeling methods and post-fire curve number and time of concentration changes is included in this paper.
