Mechanical Properties of Municipal Solid Waste from Suzhou Landfill in China
Landfill expansion is taking place in many cities of China. Knowledge of compressibility and shear strength of MSW are required for the design of a vertical landfill expansion. This paper presents a laboratory study on the mechanical properties of MSW within the Qizhishan landfill in Suzhou of China, which is under design for a vertical and lateral expansion. The laboratory study included 31 one-dimensional compression tests and 34 triaxial compression tests on the borehole samples taken at different depths. The experimental results showed that both the mechanical compressibility and shear strength parameters of MSW significantly depended on the embedment depth. The primary compression index (Cc) was observed to decrease from 1.0 to 0.3 with an increase in depth from 0 to 37 m. The magnitude of friction angle increased with an increase in the embedment depth of MSW, and the magnitude of cohesion decreased with depth.
