Amsterdam Noord/Zuidlijn: Use of Background Monitoring Data Prior to Construction Commencement
A new 3.8 km long underground railway with three cut and cover stations is under construction beneath the historic inner city of Amsterdam, as part of the new Noord/Zuid Metrolijn. The sensitive conditions in Amsterdam place high demands on settlement control and monitoring of structures which are potentially affected by the works. 74 robotic total stations have been installed on key building facades along the route taking readings from over 7500 prisms on over 1200 buildings and bridges. These are in addition to over 2000 precise levelling surface settlement points and a significant number of remotely monitored sub-surface instruments. This paper describes some uses made of the data obtained during the base monitoring and early construction phases continuing from the paper presented at FMGM 2003 which covered specification, procurement and installation of monitoring instrumentation.
