Revision of “The Technical Standard for Port and Harbor Structures” Based on LRFD
The partial factor method (PFM) based on Level 1 reliability design method had been introduced in 2007 to the technical standards for port and harbor facilities (TSPHF) in Japan. After nearly 10 years of practice, we have now decided to revise the standard to the load and resistance factor design (LRFD). This paper first compare the PFM and the LRFD through an example, i.e. the sliding and the overturning of gravity type quay wall. Then some discussions are made on various advantages of the LRFD over the PFM.
