GROUNDSS: Integrated Foundation Design Expert System
This paper reports on the progress of an investigation to improve the procedure for the process of selecting the most suitable foundation system during preliminary geotechnical design based on a holistic view of the construction process. In particular, it describes the initial development work on the expert system GROUNDSS, which will integrate ground conditions and foundation engineering with the overall construction process. The system provides the user with means to assess the effect of various foundation alternatives and ground conditions. The paper describes the design context and model architecture of the system and its main components.
